Steven Curtis Chapman cannot escape questions about his pain and the loss of his daughter Maria and the song “Cinderella.” I have sat in a stadium and listened to him tell his story and then stand up and sing that song. I was not certain how he was able to do it. I was in tears as the background video played of a little girl twirling and dancing around and he sang the words. I wondered how he could stand there and not fall apart; after all, I had.
When asked how it has been, singing “Cinderella,” he replied, “It has been amazing. It took on a whole new meaning. It has exponential more meaning.” It is a chance to show others that he believes everything that he has been singing about. Is it easy? No, but “because the gospel is a true anchor that holds true to life, “Cinderella” is more important to me because I know the day is coming”…the day when he will see his daughter again. In fact, he said one of the few things that was said to him that made a difference came from Pastor Greg. “Maria is a far greater part of your future than she is of your past.” It is true. There will be far more time in eternity than here on earth.
Obviously a strong man, father, and Christian, it is the belief in the truth of the gospel and the grace of God that Steven Curtis Chapman leans on, believes in, and uses to stand before us and sing.
