The Beanie Cap

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”
—Matthew 16:21— (NKJV)

Recently, while on patrol, we responded to a residence in order to take a supplemental report from a 487 that had occurred the previous night. While listening to the officer talk to and question the two parties involved, it took all my strength not to laugh.

“You took this of mine"

“No I didn’t!”

“Yes you did!”

“Okay I did!  But only because you took this of mine.”

“No I didn’t!”

“Yes you did!”

As I listened to them argue, it seemed as though the major item they were concerned about was—are you ready—a beanie cap. I’m not kidding! They spent more time arguing over a ten dollar beanie cap! “Where’s my beanie cap? I want my beanie cap back!”   I’ll be honest with you. While listening to these “adults” arguing back and forth, I had thoughts of introducing their hind-quarters to my size 12 shoe. Grow up!

I’ve listened to many ridiculous arguments over the years, and this one falls into the top 10. They spoke as though this beanie cap was the most important thing in their life at that moment. How crazy is that!

It didn’t take long before the Lord reminded me that one man’s beanie cap is another man’s Stetson. In other words, what me might think is of no value can be of great value to someone else. That beanie cap may not have been worth much in dollars, but for personal reasons could have been priceless to them.

In the same way, some people look at the cross as a worthless piece of wood. But to those who know what it represents, to them—it is priceless.

“. . . and you will have treasure in heaven . . .”
—Matthew 19:21— (NKJV)
