Stop Lights

“You shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth”
—Acts 1:8 (NKJV)

The other night while doing a Charles Watch we were at a stop light three cars back. The lady in the very front vehicle must have been going through some papers on her seat. When the light changed to green she didn’t obey its command.

When the light turned to red and she had still not moved, the man behind her and in front of us began screaming all kinds of words as well as beating on his steering wheel.

After a couple of minutes the officer I was with, being concerned, got out of the car, walked up to the vehicle and tapped on the driver’s window.

Against the man’s protest the officer arrested him. As he was putting him into the back seat of our police car the man began protesting, “You can’t arrest me for hollering in my car!”

After about two hours in the holding cell the officer advised the man that he was free to go. The man said, “I knew you couldn’t arrest me for what I was saying in my own car. You haven’t heard the last of this.”

The officer replied, “I didn’t arrest you for shouting in your car. I was directly behind you at the light. I saw you screaming and beating your steering wheel, and I knew there was nothing I could do to you for throwing a fit in you own car. But then I noticed the cross hanging from your rearview mirror, and the fish on the trunk lid, and the ‘My Boss is a Jewish Carpenter’ and the ‘Jesus is Coming Soon’ bumper sticker, and I thought you must have stolen the car from a Christian.”

Obviously, this story isn’t real in the literal sense, but it’s very real in the spiritual sense.

My point is this: We are a witness to everyone we encounter in our life. Whether we’re at home, at work or the store, we are a witness. To our spouse, our children, our parents, our siblings, our fellow workers, to our neighbor we are a witness. Whether we’re in church, on the freeway or at a stop light, we are a witness.

My question to us all is this—what type of a witness have we been lately? Only we and God know the answer to that question.

“Let your light so shine before men,
that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven”
—Matthew 5:16 (NKJV)
