The Pen Is Mighty

"My tongue is the pen of a skillful writer
—Psalm 45:1 (NIV)

One thing I've discovered over the years about police and fire personnel is this—you do a lot of report writing. Because of this, you realize the importance of writing accurate and thorough reports. Therefore, you ensure every "i" is dotted, every "t" is crossed, and every relevant bit of information is entered. And though some of your reports take far more time to complete than you would like, you realize the words written by your hand are pivotal in the event the case goes before a court. You understand the words you pen can make the difference between winning and losing a case.

Words are a powerful weapon that can be used for good and for bad; they can be used in the right way and the wrong way; they can be used to build and to destroy. In fact, the written word is so powerful that it prompted the English dramatist, novelist, and politician Edward Bulwer-Lytton to write, "The pen is mightier than the sword." I agree the pen is mighty for we have seen it used over the years to sign both Declarations of War and Peace Treaties. I also agree the pen is mightier than the sword, but not every sword.

There is one sword that man's pen doesn't stand a chance against. That sword belongs to God. It is the, "Sword of the Spirit, which is the WORD (Sure-word) of God" (Ephesians 6:17, emphasis added). You and I are never to rely upon the pen to do our battles, but rather, we're to rely upon God's sword, God's word. We're told His word is sharper than any two-edged sword; it is living, life-changing, and powerful as it works in the lives of those who it reaches (Hebrews 4:12).

God's sword will not destroy us; God's sword will not consume us; and God's sword will not shatter us. Instead, it reveals who and what we are, it penetrates the core of our moral and spiritual life, and it builds us, protects us, and strengthens us. His sword can literally shape our life.

As hard as you work to pen a complete report in order to prepare for the court case that may lie ahead, I encourage you to allow God to work in your life by penning His words on the tablet of your heart in order that He might shape your future.

". . . Written not with pen and ink but by the Spirit of the living God . . ."
—2 Corinthians 3:3 (NLT)
Enjoy His penning,
